Ride Overview

In the heart of Old Castile, high on the vast northern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula, lies Ribera del Duero—one of Spain’s most celebrated wine regions and a captivating landscape to discover on horseback.  Stretching across the southern plains of Burgos and into Valladolid, with touches of Segovia and Soria, the region follows the River Duero for some 115 kilometers upstream from Valladolid. From here, the river continues westward through Spain’s renowned wine country, passing the vineyards of Toro and Rueda before crossing into Portugal, where it becomes the legendary Douro on its journey to the Atlantic.

Our Spanish Vineyard Ride takes you deep into this extraordinary landscape, traveling through the provinces of Segovia and Valladolid. The adventure begins in the medieval town of Sepúlveda, dramatically perched beside the spectacular Duratón River Gorge, before heading north and west through a constantly changing panorama.  Expect dramatic limestone canyons, fragrant pine forests, sweeping vineyards, medieval villages, and exhilarating canters along superb sandy tracks. As you ride through the Duero Valley, ancient castles rise from the surrounding hills, creating a wonderfully cinematic backdrop to days spent in the saddle.

But this is a ride with a delicious twist: wine is very much part of the journey.  Ribera del Duero has a winemaking tradition stretching back to Roman times, and this exclusive itinerary offers a wonderfully personal introduction to the region’s wines and winemakers. Visit wineries that range from ancient underground wine caves in Fuentidueña to the strikingly contemporary Bodegas Protos, designed by renowned architect Richard Rogers. Along the way, discover smaller family-run bodegas where generations of winemakers continue traditions passed down through centuries.

Of course, there will be plenty of opportunities to taste the wines themselves—from celebrated Ribera del Duero labels to lesser-known gems—alongside the warm hospitality and exceptional food for which the region is known.

After days spent riding through this beautiful corner of Spain, retreat to a collection of exceptional characterful hotels, many housed in lovingly restored medieval palaces, former convents, churches, and abbeys. Each adds another layer of history and atmosphere to the experience.

Day 1 MADRID – SEPÚLVEDA

Meet your driver in Madrid at 3:00 pm for a private transfer to Sepúlveda (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes).

Upon arrival, check in at the charming Posada de San Millán, a beautifully restored 12th-century inn in the heart of the town's medieval quarter. After some time to settle in, visit the breathtaking Hermitage of San Frutos, spectacularly perched above the cliffs of Hoces del Duratón Natural Park, where sweeping views of the dramatic canyon provide a memorable introduction to the region.

Return to Sepúlveda in the evening for a welcome dinner featuring the traditional flavors of Castile before settling in for your first night.

Day 2 SEPÚLVEDA – SEBÚLCOR

Enjoy a full day on horseback, beginning with a leisurely ride along the Duratón River Canyon, allowing time to become familiar with your horse while taking in the spectacular scenery.

Stop for an aperitif followed by a picnic lunch in the heart of Hoces del Duratón Natural Park, a protected landscape renowned for its dramatic limestone cliffs and one of Europe's largest colonies of griffon vultures. In the afternoon, continue through fragrant pine forests on excellent sandy trails, ideal for long trots and relaxed cross-country canters.

Day 3 SEBÚLCOR – LAS MENCÍAS - FUENTIDUEÑA

Enjoy a half-day ride with breathtaking views of the dramatic Duratón River Canyon, home to Europe's largest colony of griffon vultures. Pause for an aperitif near the 13th-century church in Carrascal del Río, then continue along the river to Pantano de las Vencias, where a homemade paella lunch is served with panoramic views over the lake. After lunch, a short 10-minute transfer brings you to the medieval village of Fuentidueña, renowned for its Romanesque churches and ancient fortress walls.

Check in at Hotel Palacio de los Condes, a beautifully restored 18th-century Baroque church. First wine tasting in the family's historic underground caves. Dinner is served in the hotel's restaurant, set within the former chapel.

Day 4 FUENTIDUEÑA – PEÑAFIEL

Ride through the open landscapes of the Castilian meseta, crossing the high plains at a comfortable pace to the medieval village of Fuentidueña, once a fortified settlement and home to three remarkable Romanesque churches. Along the way, begin to spot the first bodegas of the Ribera del Duero, traditional wine caves carved into the hillsides, before stopping for an aperitif.

In the afternoon, continue past the Monastery of San Francisco, framed by towering cypress trees, and on to the banks of the Duero River, where a picnic lunch awaits. After a short afternoon ride, arrive in Peñafiel, ascending to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking its impressive 10th-century castle. Visit the castle and Bodegas Protos, one of the pioneering wineries of the Ribera del Duero appellation, with a private tasting.

Dinner and overnight stay at the Hotel Convento Las Claras or a local restaurant.

Day 5 CURIEL – VALBUENA DE DUERO – QUINTANILLA DE ONÉSIMO

Begin the day with a visit to Bodegas Comenge, set beneath the hilltop Curiel Castle, before setting out on a full-day ride through the endless vineyards of the Ribera del Duero. Pause for an aperitif near Pesquera del Duero, then continue to the magnificent 12th-century Monastery of Santa María de Valbuena for lunch.

In the afternoon, follow the banks of the Duero River to Quintanilla de Onésimo, where a private visit and tasting await at the family-run Bodegas Vega de Yuso. Dinner and overnight at Posada Fuente de la Aceña. Optional upgrade: 5* Hotel Monasterio de Valbuena–Spa Castilla Termal. a beautifully restored 12th-century monastery, that features an impressive 2,000 m2 thermal spa, offering the perfect opportunity to relax after each day's ride.

Day 6 QUINTANILLA DE ONÉSIMO - ABADÍA RETUERTA

Ride from Quintanilla de Onésimo to Sardón del Duero, following the banks of the Duero River to Abadía Retuerta, a beautifully restored 12th-century abbey and historic 700-hectare wine estate in the heart of the Duero Valley.

Accompanied by a private winery guide, explore the estate's vineyards while learning about its unique terroir and centuries-old winemaking heritage. Enjoy an aperitif among the vines before a private visit and wine tasting at the winery. After a short ride, picnic lunch is served in the countryside, followed by the return ride to Quintanilla de Onésimo, with opportunities for relaxed canters along the river and canal.

The afternoon is yours to unwind at the spa or, time permitting, visit another local winery.

Conclude your journey with a farewell dinner at the Michelin-starred Converso restaurant, located within Monasterio de Santa María de Valbuena. Night at Fuente Aceña (or Monasterio de Valbuena upgrade).

Day 7 VALBUENA DE DUERO – MADRID

After breakfast, depart for a group transfer to Madrid Airport (approximately 2 hours 15 minutes), arriving at around 12:00 pm. Private transfers at different times can be arranged on request at an additional cost.

NOTE: The pace of the ride varies with the terrain. Overall, this can be quite a sportive ride, with long trots and canters, and even some small cross-country jumps if the riders want to go for it. The pace will be adapted to the riders’ abilities and desires.

The average riding time is five to six hours per day.

The total distance of the trip is about 85km (115 miles).
