Ride Overview

Can’t break away for a full week?  Or, want to make a nice add on to another European trip – THIS is your ticket!  Our short week ride allows you to experience the landscape, culture and history of Lofoten from the back of a noble Icelandic equine partner. Join us on a multi-day horseback ride in the footsteps of the Vikings in Lofoten!

This ride is perfect for advanced and experienced riders who have a short time window for travel.  In May, June and July you can experience the incredible midnight sun (yup – that’s right – it doesn’t fully set).  In August the area has perpetual sunsets.  And in September and October, you’ll experience the beautiful autumn colors and, if you’re lucky, the majestic Northern Lights.

Day 1: Welcome and midnight sun tour or northern lights tour

We’ll pick you up in Svolvær (before 6PM) nd drive you to the guesthouse for check-in.

Welcome dinner in our restaurant at around 7 p.m. After dinner, at around 10 p.m., there will be a midnight sun tour or northern lights tour – depending on the time of year you visit. This is an approximately 2-hour trip in the vicinity of the farm where we will also ride on the beach.

On this ride you will get to know the farm, the horses and meet the guides.

Day 2: Full day trip on Gimsøy

Today is a fun full-day tour where we ride over the raet (a large geological feature—a terminal moraine, or gravel ridge—formed by retreating glaciers at the end of the last ice age.) and through the nature reserve on Gimsøy.

You’ll learn about the geology and wildlife on the island and see ancient monuments from the Viking Age. Raet was once used as a road by the Vikings and has probably been used frequently by the horses that gave birth to the Icelandic horse. We’ll ride down to the beaches and have a saddlebag picnic lunch while holding your horse. Todays ride is a moderately demanding one of about 5 hours.

Day 3: Vestvågøy and Aaland Farm

Today's adventure is a day trip from Bøstad to Aalan Gård. (www.aalan.no) It's a 5-6 hour tour including lunch with local cheeses and herbs, and homemade cake. We will also hear stories about the area.

The ride is mostly on a gravel road with a lot of speed if you wish, but we also get up to the higher heights of the mountain with incredible views. Medium to demanding ride day.

Day 4: Full day trip on Gimsøy

This day we ride from the farm in the opposite direction to what we did on the first full-day trip.

We’ll ride across the local beach and over to the cabin field, before heading towards Vik and the beach there. We continue towards Årstrand, and ride out across the infield towards the sea, before following the coastline over to a secret beach where we enjoy a packed lunch.

Beautiful views of the mountains on Vestvågøy. Moderately demanding ride of about 4-5 hours.

Day 5: Over the mountain to Unstad

Today is a ride with a lot of climbing for the horses and very little speed. On the other hand, the views are off the charts fantastic and we are served an organic lunch at Lofoten Gårdsysteri. While there, we'll also enjoy a guided tour and a taste of the farm’s own cheeses.

The day ends at Unstad after we’ve ridden the old road down to the fabled surf spot. At Unstad you can visit the famous surf café and taste the cinnamon rolls there (we HIGHLY recommend it). An approximately 6-hour demanding tour.

Day 6: Departure

We serve your last lovely breakfast in the restaurant, before you say goodbye to your new equine friend and transfer to the airport.
