Ride Overview
Menorca may be small – but it is definitely a “must ride there” place! This unspoiled Balearic island is full of great contrasts in the landscape and in nature. It has preserved its rural life and it encapsulates the history of thousands of years of civilization – we were amazed – it has the largest number of archaeological sites of any Mediterranean island. The settlement of Torre d’en Galmes, erected by the early settlers of the island in the Bronze Age 1300BC!
AND – we discovered that Menorca has its own local breed of horses: the black Menorcan horses. They are drop dead gorgeous and oh so sensible. They navigate the varied terrain, including steps – yes, literal steps – both up and down, with ease. Recognized as a formal breed only a few years ago, the breed is, in fact, centuries old.
This is not a fast ride, but don’t let that deter you from signing up as it’s a very technical ride that covers some rugged terrain. The wild Northern coastline with rocky towering cliffs and red beaches, the deep lush ravines, canyons and caves of the Southern coast, these combine to make Menorca an ideal habitat for many kinds of endemic plants and haven for shelter of migratory birds. And the water……simply stunning! You ride the famous El Cami de Cavalls – and perimeter “road” designed to help protect the island and completely inaccessible unless on horse or foot – you will see the island the way the original Menorcans saw it.
Fresh seafood abounds as does wonderful meat and vegetables. Be sure to try the “caldereta de llagosta”, a succulent lobster stew served on fine slices of toast. You’ll also enjoy a traditional lunch at local cheese making farm hosted by the farmers. You won’t go home hungry!
