Ride Overview

Norway – Vikings – fjords – crystalline water…….endless summer days – oh – and gaited horses!

What more do you need to jump on this chance to accompany us on this exploratory tour? You will ride along the beaches, on Viking trails and over mountains with fantastic views on noble and surefooted Icelandic horses.

Designed for riders who have good riding experience and can control a horse at all gaits in open terrain. Please note that it is a prerequisite that the you are in good physical shape, and are prepared for sections that are too steep to climb on horseback, so we have to get off and hand walk the horses. To join us, you must have experience with off-road riding, and be able to stay quiet and balanced and trust your horse in steep sections.

This program focuses on a selection of different types of rides that are scenic and exciting, a mix of trails, dirt roads and some climbing up into the mountains. The rides are moderate to demanding and the rider must have solid experience riding in different types of terrain and at all gaits. To give you a true sense of the untamed and drop dead gorgeous scenery, there is 1 night in a tent camp which has been set up in advance, with the rest of the nights at a comfortable and well appointed guesthouse.

And wait for it – your guide uses a boat on one of the rides to reach a more remote island in Lofoten, so there will be some island hopping! This is an extraordinary riding and nature experience!

Settle in and soak in the scenic views and maybe enjoy a walk on the white sandy beach just a 100 meters from your guest house before dinner and meeting of the horses at the pasture nearby.

Dinner in the restaurant, where you’ll be introduced to traditional Norwegian cuisine crafted from fresh, local products. You will meet your guide for the week. We go through the week’s program together and you will get to know the history of the restaurant and area.

After dinner - a remarkable opportunity - you have a 1.5 hour midnight sun ride. It's a great way to get introduced to the horses and stable and learn more about the history and the old ancient Viking settlement here.

The ride begins at 10PM and arrives back at the stable at midnight!

Day 2: Full day tour at Gimsøy

Breakfast at the restaurant before you get ready for your first longer tour.

You will enjoy the classic tour to Vinje Beach over the nature reserve and the Viking Road. Lots of chances to test different gates, canter at the beach and try some good tølt. We have an easy lunch with the horses, at the tables outside a little local shop to get a taste of the local atmosphere at Gimsøy. Aprox 25 km in all.

Dinner back at the restaurant.

Day 3: “Island jumping” and Storemolla

After breakfast you will head to Svolvær and spend some hours in Svolvær city centre before taking the boat, first to Skrova island where you will enjoy lunch at the only restaurant on the Island. Afterward, you continue by boat to Storemolla where you'll spend the night.

At arrival you check in to the tent camp for the night at Brettesnes Gård. The tent camp with sleeping bags will be prepared already, for 4 to 6 people in each tent by the beach. All the horses came earlier to Storemolla via ferry and are already at the farm (this is a riding trip, after all!). You'll enjoy a shorter ride on an old road on the south side of the island and explore the small city centre of Brettesnes on horseback and get to hear the story of this small fishing village.

In the evening you'll be served dinner in the boathouse by our hostess for the night. After dinner a crackling bonfire awaits before going to sleep by the sea and lapping waves.

Toilets and shower is available at the farm close by.

Day 4: Exploring Storemolla

Breakfast at the main building at Brettesnes gård and then you mount up and get ready to ride to the other side of the island on perfect gravel roads (aprox 25-30 km). You'll have lots of tølting and explore the entire island.

You'll enjoy an easy lunch during the ride before heading back to Brettesnes and returning to Svolvær by boat followed by a drive back to the guesthouse for a delicious dinner.

Day 5: Hidden beach at Gimsøy

After breakfast you have some free time until lunch. Maybe you'll want to hike Hoven - the small mountain at the farm. A 2-2.5 hours hike with a beautiful 360 degree views.......

After lunch, a half day tour to Vik on the west side of Gimsøy where you end up on a hidden beach - a truly special location where you test different gates with the horses and have a snack before heading home (15-20 km ride)

Day 6: Heading for the mountains and Storknubben

Today is the last full day riding program of the week. You head towards Gjenndalen and climb on horseback towards Trolltjønna aprox 350 meters above sea level! You'll have a stunning view along with a break by our by the small lake.

After the break you head home to the guesthouse and a warm sauna and swim in the Nordic Sea. Aprox 20-25 km long ride with climbing.

One last dinner to soak in the week’s adventures in this unique and special country.

Day 7: Free Day

After a very active week we suggest a sleep in and later breakfast - it is vacation, after all!
