Outlander Jamie Fraser Ride

Day 1 - Dores to Whitebridge - 20 miles

We will collect you outside the library by the bus station in Inverness between 08.30 and 09.00 and take you to meet the horses at Dores, at the head of Loch Ness, just outside
Inverness. Starting our ride around 10.00, we ride high above Loch Ness - looking out for Nessie as we go!

Riding through forests on Fraser lands on the south side of the loch we zig zag our way to the top of the beautiful Fair Haired Lads Pass for stunning views over the loch, down towards Urquhart
castle on the other side of the loch, then ride on passing below the pine clad crags where the Dunbonnet hid and Fergus lost a hand.

We stay at the Whitebridge Hotel, built on the site of a ‘King's House’, which was a hostelry used by the soldiers of General Wade while they were stationed in the Highlands building a network of military roads to link the forts of the area and make it easier to keep an eye on the activities of the clans! You can still see the original bridge built here in the 18th Century.

Day 2 - Whitebridge to Fort Augustus - 14 miles

Riding on through Fraser lands we follow the new, South Loch Ness Trail, which winds through forests before climbing to Suidhe Chumein for fantastic, far reaching views over Loch Tarf, the Great Glen and the hills beyond, we follow the road for the last few miles to descend to Fort Augustus, site of the old barracks at the head of Loch Ness.

A second night at the Whitebridge Hotel.

Day 3 - Fort Augustus to Tomich - 23 miles

Following another old military road, this time built by General Cauldfield, we head over the hills behind Fort Augustus, before joining an old drove road into Glen Affric. This route was the main
link between the two parts of Fraser lands on either side of Loch Ness. Glen Affric is famous as being one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland. Stunning views over the hills towards Kintail as we ride over the pass.

We spend the night at the Tomich Hotel.

Day 4 - Tomich to Glen Affric to Tomich - 18 miles

We spend a day exploring beautiful Glen Affric and the trail we ride on was the old road west, which linked the Mackenzie lands on the West and the Fraser lands on the East coasts. This road is
shown on maps of the 1700's. Some good opportunities for faster riding today.

We return to Tomich for the night.

In Diana's Outlandish Companion, this is the area where Lallybroch would be situated and we see a potential contender! There are plenty of great opportunities today for some breathtaking canters.

Day 5 - Tomich to Struy - 10 miles

The ride today visits places associated with the Outlander Books.

We ride on the Eskdale road, where Jamie surrendered himself to the redcoats, passing other landmarks, both associated with Outlander and Jacobite history of this period. Be prepared for
some sad tales of the real Highlanders who fought (and died) at the Battle of Culloden. It’s a short day today, so we’ll do a bit more sightseeing, or you can just relax in your room.

We stay at the Cnoc Hotel.

Day 6 - Struy to Muir of Ord - 18 miles

Today we ride past Erchless Castle, seat of the clan Chisholm over the hills on another ancient track, this time an old drove road, which takes us to the hills above Muir of Ord and Beauly again
with stunning views over the surrounding countryside. We’ll drop down into the valley to leave our horses at the end of the trail, finishing the ridden part of the tour here.

We spend our last night together in the Lovat Arms Hotel in Beauly.

Day 7 - Culloden, Urquhart Castle, Clava Cairns

Sightseeing:
We start our day in the village of Beauly, the seat of the Fraser clan – and lair of Simon Lovat, the Old Fox. Then we head towards Inverness, for a day of sightseeing, including a visit to
Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness where Claire and Frank picnicked then Culloden Moor, where we join a tour of the battlefield and visit the clan stones. We also visit the fantastic new Culloden exhibition centre, which is full of interesting memorabilia with interactive characters and an immersion theatre where you can experience first-hand what it was like to be in the middle of the action at Culloden.

Then we visit the stone circle at Clava Cairns with its cleft stone – and as long as you haven’t slipped back through time, we’ll visit a few other interesting sites associated with the books too, before heading to Kingussie where we spend the night.

For those not extending, this will be our last day together.

Extension Option:

Everything as listed in the Outlander ride option 1 above, but also including extra visits as outlined below. This is an extension package of 3 additional days.

Day 8

We visit Ruthven Barracks, a ruined barracks situated on the hill outside Kingussie, then wander through the Highland Folk museum which was used as location for the township scenes
in ‘Rent’, before beginning our journey south. We visit Castle Leoch’ and other interesting locations en-route. We spend the night in the village that stood in for Inverness in the filming to look for a ghostly Highlander!

Day 9

We wander the streets of Cranesmuir today, visiting the garden where Geillis and Claire collected herbs. Then we visit the ruins of Lallybroch, before heading to Blackness Castle,
which was used as Fort William in filming – Black Jack Randalls' lair!

Then we head on to Hopetoun House, with was used as a location for several key scenes – see how many you can recognize!
locations... Tonight we stay in Linlithgow.

Day 10

Into Edinburgh today, where we walk the Royal Mile from the beautiful Holyrood Palace to imposing Edinburgh Castle. On the way we call in at a few other places with Outlander references
on the ‘Mile’ and some other special locations too – we like to keep some places we visit a surprise!

Once we finish our tour, we will say our goodbyes outside Waverley Railway Station. From here there are good transport links to all parts of the City and the rest of the UK.
