For those that are interested in the Chyulu Hills ride but want a ride that moves out at a faster pace and for longer days in the saddle, this is the perfect fit. A longtime favorite of avid foxhunters and polo players, this ride is geared toward the experienced and confident rider.

Covering similar terrain as Chyulu for the first part of the ride, riders have a chance to be introduced to the plains and wild game shadowed by the famous Mount Kilamanjaro in Amboseli National Park. This ride features the chance to ride amidst and within in striking distance of all sorts of wild game – elephants, zebra, buffalo, antelope, warthogs, wildebeest, lions, hipp and giraffe. You will experience up close the interaction among the groups and see every detail of their routines.

This ride not only offers chances for long gallops over dry lake beds (perfect footing for the horses) but also has natural obstacles for fun jumping along the way.

Each evening, you’ll relax around the dining table and swap stories about the day before retiring to your tent for a good nights’ rest as you are lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wildlife moving around in the too distant area.

2012 Dates: Jan. 22-29, Feb. 12-19, June 23-30, July 12-28, Aug. 4-11, Sept. 1-8, Dec. 30-Jan. 6
Rates: $4,930.00 USD per person in a shared tent (Single Supplement: $1,110.00 USD)

Ride back to the days and nights of Karen Blixen and magic that is only found on the plains and in the foothills of the Serengeti. You will travel in the same manner as the English hunting parties of a hundred years ago but the only thing you’ll be shooting is your camera.
This ride, somewhat less active than its sister ride in Amboseli, still offers the chance to gallop on the plains and see scores of wildlife. You will see elephants, buffalo, hyena, ostrich and also have the chance to take a few hikes as well as game drives, all in shadow of Kilamanjaro.
Along the way, your guide has created this itinerary with a trail that leads through local Masai tribal villages giving you a completely unique experience and the chance to see these wonderful indigenous people in their villages and as they conduct their daily affairs of tending to their herds of cattle and sheep.

Each night you will retire to your luxurious tent, complete with full bed, night table, shower and wardrobe. (private toilet tents are stationed near each tent to give you your own private accommodations) Wonderful dinners are prepared and served in the dining tent, complete with great conversation that will accompany the sounds of the native animals as they settle in for the night.

This is truly one of the most special rides offered. It epitomizes the absolute best of what a quintessential African safari has to offer while offering you all the creature comforts of a lovely guesthouse.

2012 Dates: March 2-6, June 9-15, July 7-13, August 18-24, Sept. 15-21, Oct. 13-19, Dec. 9-15
Rates: $4,005.00 USD per person in a shared tent (Single Supplement: $1,045.00 USD)

By luck, we stumbled upon a place called “The Settlement at Thomas Divide”. We met Carol Dilley, who is the property and sales manager (this is an equestrian community) and she explained that while they specialize in selling acreage for development, they heartily welcome folks who are either “passing through” or just want to come for a visit.

Please contact her for further information, if interested. This area is simply some of the most lovely we have ever seen. Her details are:

History was made on the famous beaches of Gold, Juno and Omaha on the western coast of France. The defeat of Nazi Germany by the Allies during World War II forever shaped the world as we know it today. This is an area of fertile fields, dramatic cliffs and amazing history. But the rich history of this area goes much further back than the mid 1900s. The Normans are a unique people that have a diverse cultural heritage which was influenced by various other cultures. The early Romans left their mark as part of their Conquest in 51 BC.

Then, the formidable Vikings, known for their plunder siege laying, landed in Normandy in the 9th Century, and it, like the rest of France, was impacted by the French Revolution. But this land is not all turmoil and battlefield, it also claims royal heritage. William the Conqueror was the only monarch of England that was born outside of that country and his ascencion to the throne is quite a story! It’s truly amazing how this area of France holds such a significant place in world history.

The countryside is a wonderful mix of rolling hills, woodlands and beaches, all of which make for some of the best trail riding in France. This very special itinerary is designed to give you daily trail rides of about four hours each day and then tours of the most impactful destinations. During your trip you will be taken to the American Cemetary, an overwhelmingly beautiful but tragic place that remembers the many brave Americans that fought against the heinous crimes of the Nazi party. You will also tour the Artificial Harbor and see the incredibe logistical details of how troops were able to land far out at sea and drive vehicles to the shoreline, the German Battery where gunboats lie dormant and quiet and you can freely crawl down into the battlements and feel the atmosphere of the caves and tunnels. Additionally, you will be taken to Pointe du Hoc, the infamous cliff top battleground that was the pivotal point in the Allies successful battle against the Germans. Tracing history further back, you will tour the city of Bayeux and see the incredible Bayeux Cathedral and the Bayeux Tapestry – an incredible work of art that is 230 feet long and over 600 years old – the first written reference to it was recorded in 1476. It tells the story of the invasion of England by the Normans in 1066 and the royal heritage of William the Conqueror. The town also has wonderful shops for wandering or procuring your own tapestry or handmade collectibles.

Whether you are a history buff or not, this area will enthrall you with its warmth and the hospitality of the people. Everyone is welcome and Americans and Canadians are of special recognition to the locals and they all make every effort to show their appreciation today as they did 65 years ago. The area also boasts some of the best seafood in the world. Mussels, shrimp, scallops and escargot are prepared fresh and there is always ample Calvados (apple brandy) to finish off a great meal.

Testimonials:

This was a delightful getaway. The lodge was magnificent, and the dinners were the same! Rosa and I had a great time. They got Rosa up to a Western trot, and I refreshed my English riding. We did have to switch Rosa’s first mount because she couldn’t find the “go” button.

I enjoyed the non riding part every bit as much as the riding part. Almost every day I went to the lake, where I often ran into riders that had been on the trail with me. Everything and everyone was so classy. Mountain Top also instituted a once-a-week “steak or lobster” dinner by the lake this year. It was absolutely perfect. The view could not be beat!

This is definitely a place that I would not only recommend, but look forward to returning.
A great value!

- Martha Villegas

The Mountain Top Inn was fantastic! I cannot say enough about Louise and Amelia who provided the Horse Lesson instruction and trail rides. Both are very knowledgeable and “true horse women.” My riding improved immensely over the 4 days, and I plan to return in the future.

Our room was very comfortable with a lovely view of the Chittendon Reservoir, food was delicious and service was personable.

We had a great time, and I would highly recommend the trip to others.

- MaryLee Daniels

I wanted to write and tell you how much I thoroughly enjoyed your riding trip I recently took to Vermont! It was both breathtaking and adventurous. Having never been to the furthest reaches of the Northeast, I had no idea what to expect; but it was beautiful beyond my hopes and imagination.

Nestled deep in the mountains; far removed from all the hustle and bustle, it was exactly what I needed to recharge after a long and stressful spring. The facilities were rustic, yet elegant at the same time. The horses were superb; every one of them. And having had the opportunity to ride several; both in the ring and on the GREAT cross country course, I can say that without bias! The instructor really made a point of aligning me with just the perfect horse every time. Please thank them again for me.

Coming back to our lodging each night was something to look forward to; comfortable and relaxing after a day on the trail. The meals were “savory” to say the least and being a wine connoisseur; I appreciated the extensive offering every night.

I would gladly go back again if you didn’t have so many other trips from which to choose. I am on a short layover in Cincinnati, on my way to France to take part in your Normandy Beaches ride, and I expect to have just as enjoyable a time there.

Thank you again for helping make a memory I will never forget Stacey.
- Douglas Korn – Lexington, Kentucky

What a wonderful vacation at the Mountain Top Inn. They were so nice and accommodating and the horses were wonderful. I would highly recommend the place to anyone who just wants to get away, see some beautiful scenery and not have to share the trails with hikers and bikers.

I had so much fun I am already thinking about doing it again! Thank you for everything. You made planning this vacation so easy and it was my first attempt at traveling alone and I loved it.

Thanks again!
- Suzi Shawl

Situated one and a half hours south of Montreal and a mere thirty minutes from the historic town of Lake Placid, Keeseville, NY is a perfect place for kids and adults of all ages to hone their skills and experience the untouched natural beauty of the majestic Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York.

This equestrian center, run by an incredible mother-daughter team, offers some of the best training and riding available to the general public. This trip is a combination program and offers both lessons and trail riding. It is a wonderful program for folks that want to see a pristine part of the country and receive excellent instruction.

Julie Edwards is a lifelong rider and formerly evented through Preliminary and is currently showing dressage at Prix St. Georges. She is a certified American Riding Instructor for both dressage and eventing. Her daughter Tara, has an equally impressive curricula vitae and has competed in eventing extensively including several years at Kentucky’s famous Rolex Three Day Event. She is a certified American Riding Instructor and has worked for the likes of Jimmy Wofford and Jessica Ransehausen. Together they offer riding programs for riders of all levels and encourage folks to step out of their comfort zones to the degree they are comfortable.

As an alternative to lessons, they have miles and miles of incredible trail riding. This part of NY is in many ways, the way it has always been which is amazing considering they are only 1.5 hours from Montreal or 2 hours from Albany. The trail rides take you up into the Adirondacks where you have the chance to ride along winding trails through wooded areas where the deer, squirrels and an occasional wild turkey are your only company. Some of the remarkable vistas that you encounter offer views for miles overlooking the lush woods or the bottom part of Lake Champlain. Each day offers different views but all are breathtaking.

Youth Riding Camp Program

Designed for children ages 7-17, the philosophy of this program is to bring the whole world of the horse to the child with all it realities. From early morning feeding to catching, tacking up, grooming, culminating in the beautiful ride through the fields or jumping and back to the reality of untacking, more grooming, cleaning and feeding again. From the beginner who learns the rudiments of horsemanship to the advanced rider, the steps toward the whole horseman will help them on the path to maturity.

This program offers riding twice daily during each session. In addition, each day is filled with all variety of horse activities geared towards developing the knowledgeable horsewoman. Each student has the opportunity to improve riding skills, stable safety, grooming, saddling, feeding and training horses.

This unique program is based on the goals and ideals of the United States Pony Club. Instruction is given in dressage, cross-country and stadium jumping. A protective hardhat is required at all times when mounted. Instruction twice daily in small groups insures rapid progress for each student.

Each child has their very own horse to groom and ride exclusively. It is a very special partnership in which both thrive and learn quickly. These horses are among the happiest and most able for a program such as this, for they are not confused by the directions of all kinds and styles of riders. They are more spirited and of a higher quality than horses that are ridden by more than one rider daily.

By the end of each session, every child will have experienced the wonder and accomplishment that comes from working closely with a horse and creating a true and lasting friendship – a bond that creates a true harmony between horse and human.

It has been said that passion has inspired individuals to become larger than life. Lucky is the parent whose child craves to be around horses. The child appears driven by a higher life form and no substitute can be found. These children are not hanging around the streets, nor do they struggle with decisions about which activity warrants their participation. For them, there is only one true love and all other parts of life are downstream. Their focus leads them on the path of discipline, physical stamina and exercise which will carryover to their adult lives whether or not horses can be a major part.

Their love of horses carries them through the throes of adolescence, while parents of non-focused teenagers worry about poor choices. The horse driven child who is permitted to become a horseman is a little dirty, very tired and ecstatically happy at the end of the day, leaving little room for distractions into other less desirable activities.

A mere 90 miles north of Manhattan lies the tranquil and bucolic countryside of Dutchess County. Long known and well regarded as a wonderful part of the famous Hudson River valley, the towns in this area exude a charm long forgotten. Winding roads and low lying stone walls extend an invitation for fun driving and exploration and around every corner lies a new treasure, from a stately mansion to markers noting the importance of a particular wooded grove during the Revolutionary War. This is the area that was a haven of rest, peace and sporting activities for likes of FDR, the Roosevelts and the Astors who all have family homes in the area. Springwood, the home of FDR and Val-kill, the cottage that Eleanor Roosevelt used as a retreat from public duties are two of the wonderful homes that can easily be visited when not riding.

It is in this area that you can find some of the best horseback riding and instruction in the northeast. Your base for the week is the quaint town of Millbrook, an unassuming town that is evocative of the villages of a long gone time. The serenity of its’ main street and the boutique shops and restaurants infuse you with a sense of relaxation and just beckon for a stroll. That may be a good reason that folks like Liam Neeson, Bette Midler, Katie Couric and Mary Tyler Moore all have homes here. Leaving town, the call of the saddle will beckon you as you drive by farms of 100-200 acres and see the horses peacefully grazing in the pastures lined with wooden fences in all directions.

The riding program is offered by a husband and wife team, Tom and Maddie Duggan. Tom is a BHS certified instructor from Ireland that has made Millbrook his home for the last twenty years and now specializes in teaching and importing Irish Sport Horses and developing them for competition in dressage, jumping or cross country work. Maddie is the avid competitor and can be found at rated shows including HITS, during the show season. They are both consummate professionals and take the development of both their students and their horses as the key to their success. In the winter months, they are both active members of the Millbrook Hunt and are now teaching their two young daughters, Anna and Josephine, the stunning beauty of the countryside on a crisp winters’ day.

Each day of this program allows the rider to submerse themselves into their riding. Lessons are geared toward personal goals and include instruction in flatwork, jumpimg or cross country. There are also miles and miles of scenic trails to be explored and with the access to the Hunt trails, they too, offer the chance to jump fences, ditches and stone walls, for those that are interested. The facility has a very large and well lit indoor arena and a very suitable cross country field with ample obstacles for riders of every level. The trail riding is accessed directly from the equestrian center as well.

This program includes three nights accommodation at a lovely and well appointed B&B located in the heart of Millbrook, daily breakfast, five riding allotments which consist of either a semi private lesson or a two hour trail ride and can be specifically arranged prior to your arrival or upon arrival, instructor/guide, horse, tack, a tour of the Millbrook winery and all taxes.

Dates: This program is run every week from Wednesday through Friday. Check in at the B&B is anytime after 2:00PM on Tuesday. Check out is Friday by 12:00 noon.

Rates: $660.00 USD per person in a shared room. (Single Supplement: $250.00 USD)

Private lessons are also offered and can be guaranteed for an additional $25.00 USD per lesson.

Testimonials:

The training in New York was excellent and I was able to ride better than I normally ride at home. Millbrook was a lovely and relaxing town. I really needed a week of quiet and I got that.

Thank you.

- Jennifer Goodman

I just had to tell you that I had a WONDERFUL time! Don at the bed & breakfast was wonderful, and Tom at the barn was so knowledgeable, friendly and his horses and facility were amazing.

Thank you so much for coordinating! It was exactly the vacation I needed. I will definitely recommend you guys to all my friends!

- Marce Evans

We had a lovely time on this ride. The Porter House was cute, and Tim the proprietor was friendly and helpful. The town of Millbrook was quiet and clean and had some good restaurants and cute boutiques. The surrounding countryside was bee-you-tiful, rolling hills, horse farms everywhere, well tended. The barn was beautiful, still newish, clean, with paneled walls, outside windows in the stalls, lots of pastures with nice fences. The horses were huge Irish warmbloods, in great shape and well groomed, with tack in good repair and fitted well. The horses had great attitudes and lots of physical ability.

Tom Duggan was a great instructor, encouraging and observant, and he follows a classical hunt seat style of riding, which personally was exactly what I was looking for. They have a great outdoor field with lots of cross-country style jumps. The trail rides were beautiful and the scenery was quite varied. My only complaint was that the whole thing was too short. I would have been happy to stay several more days, and I would definitely recommend it.

Thanks for making our trip possible, and we will look to Active Travel again for our next riding vacation.

- Laura Carey

One of the fastest growing riding disciplines, Reining has wide appeal to both Western and English riders. Often referred to as “Cowboy Dressage”, Reining, like Dressage, requires smooth and virtually effortless looking execution of patterns. Reining is a judged event designed to show the athletic ability of a ranch type horse within the confines of a show arena.

In NRHA competition, contestants are required to run one of ten approved patterns, included in the NRHA Handbook. Each pattern includes small slow circles, large fast circles, flying lead changes, roll backs over the hocks, 360 degree spins done in place, and exciting sliding stops that are the hallmark of the reining horse.

The NRHA Judging System is recognized as the leading format for judging an equine event that combines technical and stylistic elements coupled with consideration of “degree of difficulty”. And as a testament to the success of this system, many segments of the equine judging discipline have openly embraced the NRHA Judging System.

Riders will train with NRHA judge Dave Moore, who has been a part of the horse industry for over 25 years and was most recently featured on the November 2009 cover of Horse & Rider. He also had the winning run at the 2009 Florida Derby. After graduating from the State University of New York at Morrisville with a degree in Horse Husbandry, Dave went on to work as an apprentice and assistant to Terry Thompson for two years. He won his first Appaloosa World Championship title in 1982. Dave has ridden and coached numerous National and World title holders in equitation, pleasure, western riding and reining. His primary goals and interests are heavily tied to the NRHA. He is currently a carded judge for the ApHC and the NRHA. Dave has the ability to not only prepare the horses but to truly educate his riders and his style of teaching and communication are clear, motivating and encouraging to riders of all levels.

Located in Southwest Ranches, FL, this clinic is easily accessed by either Fort Lauderdale or Miami airports. For those that want to haul in, the ranch is located a very short distance from I-75, just west of Hollywood. Attendees will stay at a new hotel about a three minute drive from the ranch and may enjoy the sites of Fort Lauderdale (15 minutes by car) or South Beach (45 minutes by car) when not training.

Dates are limited to 6 riders per clinic and include three hours of mounted and theory discussion daily.

Dates: Available upon request, 4 riders minimum

Rate: $1,050.00 USD per person in a shared, king bedded room
(Single Supplement: $375.00 USD)

Testimonials:

Sarah and I had a great time. We had Dave all to ourselves. It was pouring rain on Monday morning so we just talked and signed the waivers and then went back to our hotel. [The hotel was very nice and close to Dave's place and several malls.] It was still raining but not so hard when we went back in the afternoon so we loaded 3 horses on a trailer and went to a covered arena that Dave can use. Dave watched us ride to get a sense of our skill levels and we did some beginning work.

The rest of the week we got to ride mornings and afternoons. The first couple of times we got to do some turning Sarah and I both got dizzy, but by the end of the week we were both doing pretty well. The sliding stops were very interesting to practice in the front paddock by running at the fence!!! Sarah and I both got a couple of nice ones out of many attempts. Dave told Sarah that if she worked at it she could be competitive. Dave had her working on flying lead changes by Thursday. I was getting lots of flying lead changes but not because I was trying to do so. I did a little better when Dave let me begin neck reining which was not until Friday morning. All in all we had a wonderful time!

This ride will allow you to discover California’s Wine Country with its rugged and breathtaking scenery while enjoying local wine tasting including an organic and bio dynamic winery and a private tour of an award winning local vineyard.

Your base for the week is the lovely and recently restored Tallman Hotel nestled in the heart of historic Upper Lake. This area is home to the largest natural lake in California, home of the Bartlett Pear, organic walnut orchards, estate vineyards and wild rice fields. Lake County has a very long and storied history with the local Native Americans and early Pioneers, early 1900’s resort history and pre-prohibition wine production. Lake County has such a wide variety of terrain and historic sites you get to see something different every day!

The horses are all experienced ranch and trail horses that are comfortable for the varied terrain and the fun days in the saddle. These gentle horses are the owners’ personal ranch horses ridden year round. They are a dream and many clients fall in love with their mount and want to bring them home! Their dispositions make them ideal for experienced riders, and folks just getting into trail riding. Each day you will ride out on a new trail and see countryside unlike the previous day, all the while enjoying the smooth and wonderful cadence of your horse beneath you.

The trips each day take you on park trails and historic paths that allow you to soak in the amazing countryside. You will see many types of birds including the majestic bald eagle, herons, egrets and a wide assortment of California wildlife. The rolling hills with the tall swaying grasses leave you with the feeling of being one of the first explorers in this area. When you come around the bend and see the crystal blue waters of a lake, with neither a boat, nor a person in site, you truly do feel like you are a pioneer just discovering this area.

The packages are 3-night and 6-night riding vacations that include luxurious accommodations at the hotel, evening meals taken at a variety of local restaurants coupled with wonderful local wines acquired during the many wine tastings experienced during your stay (guests may bring their own wine or purchase wine at the restaurant as adult beverages are not included in the package).

Testimonials:

This ride far, far exceeded my expectations. It had everything: gorgeous scenery, a great horse to ride (Hocus Pocus, worlds’ sweetest quarterhorse mare), charming accommodations, and good food. I thought the wineries would be boring, but they were so much fun. Our hosts, Sam and Teri Pickering, could not have been more gracious and unfailingly good-humored. They were also very knowledgeable about the flora, fauna, and local history, which is not the case on every trail ride, and which really adds to the “local flavor.”

Thanks to everyone for everything! I had a great time.

- Rexanne Felton

The horses are extraordinary. They are very calm and attached to human beings. They are surefooted and obediant and very mellow for their ages. They are intelligent, especially Drifter (even if he is a little willful. All the smartest horses are).

[The] wranglers were excellent. They were very well informed about local plants and animals and history. They are great horse people. This is rarer than most people realize.

[The] ranch’s views are breathtaking. …a piece of Paradise and really great horses. …It is unique. I don’t think you could find a more beautiful piece of land.

Also I can tell [they] really love horses. This is a great asset. Horses have enriched my life for the last 25 years. They are mysterious and a privilege to be around.

Sincerely,
Jean Austin

The accommodations were excellent and the staff extremely gracious. There isn’t another place in that area that could have afforded us such a perfect setting with the Blue Wing Saloon right on the hotel premises. We spent most of our evenings lounging in the courtyard enjoying bottles of wine that were purchased that day.

Sam was a good outfitter and each day offered us a scenic and safe ride. His wranglers managed their duties in a professional, confident manner and were a pleasure to interact with. I enjoyed the gaited horses very much.

Overall I would recommend this trip to any rider, cautioning them to go when the weather would be cool and to ride the gaited horses.

~ Jo Waller

We had a great time and made new friends. The Hotel was very nice, the food was great, the horses were very good and Terri and Sam did everything they could to make our stay the best. Also, the mountains were beautiful and the weather was wonderful.

Ride back in time to the days of the Wild West – when the land was a vast pictorial landscape of rushing rivers, rocky outcroppings and wide open high altitude meadows filled with wildflowers. This fun and surprisingly luxurious ride takes you deep into the Emigrant Wilderness, a glaciated landscape of great scenic beauty. The northeastern third of the Wilderness is dominated by volcanic ridges and peaks; the remaining areas consist of many sparsely vegetated, granitic ridges interspersed with numerous lakes and meadows. Elevations range from below 5,000 feet to 11,570 feet with most of the popular areas from 7,500 to 9,000 feet. Traces of snow on the ground and covering the peaks linger into June, sometimes later following very wet winters. Summers are generally dry and mild, but afternoon thundershowers may occur periodically so you’ll want to keep your raincoat handy on the ride.

Various native peoples occupied this area for 10,000 years, spending the summer and early autumn hunting in the high country and trading with groups from the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada. The most recent groups were the Sierra Miwok and the Piute. Following the discovery of gold in 1848, large numbers of miners and settlers came to the Sierra and the native cultures quickly declined. In September-October 1852, the Clark-Skidmore party became the first emigrant group to travel the West Walker Route over Emigrant Pass – and you will understand the hardship and significance of this as you and your sure footed equine partner negotiate some of the same terrain.

Since 1853, this has been a very difficult passage with many hardships for larger groups and as such, many emigrating groups abandoned the effort. During the course of your week ride you’ll have the chance to visit Relief Valley and Relief Reservoir, so named because of the assistance some emigrants received there from residents of the Sonora area. In 1931, the U.S. Forest Service designated this area as the Emigrant Basin Primitive Area and then in 1975, the Emigrant Basin Primitive Area was designated as the Emigrant Wilderness.

Trip Includes: 6 nights cabin and/or luxury tented accommodation, 5 days of guided trail riding, all meals, horse, tack, guide and tax. *Note that airport transfers and gratuities are not included but will be arranged at a preset time. They can each be paid directly to the driver or your guide in cash.

Dates: TBA

Price: $2,195.00 USD per person in shared accommodation

Testimonials:

Just a belated thank you for the great trip. It was an adventure, but after only a week back in Newport Beach, I’m ready to return to the mountains, cold and dirt notwithstanding.

- Brigid McMahon

OH MY … it was CAMPING. Real CAMPING. No structures at all. Tents and tarps. Weather- 60/70 in the day but 40 or less at night. Stars were fabulous. A bit chilly at night but once I put on my heavier clothes I slept well.

I found a special place with a little waterfall . So lovely and peaceful. Saw a bald eagle.

There were 4 men who took care of us. They mostly run hunters (read as men) into the back country, so compared to that, this is a “luxury” camping trip because we weren’t eating cold beans out of a can, sitting in a deer blind for 5 days!

They were great cooks (baked fresh muffins, lox and bagels, steak, veal stew, polenta) and along with the large quantities of liquid refreshment (starting with either Champagne or Blood Mary’s and ending with decaf cappuccinos and Bailey’s) – it was a lot of fun.

I rode everyday. The rides were arduous. The only thing more amazing than the terrain was the fact you are riding a horse over it. Honestly, I would have been hard pressed to walk a mile or two on some of the trails we rode. I had tons of fun and stepped up into the saddle for everything going.

Blew thru my 2 cameras and the cameras of my two friends capturing the incredible scenery.

Remarkably, I am no worse for wear even after the 7 hours in and then at least 3 to 4 hours everyday and then another 7 hours coming back out.

So all in all it was a great experience! Thank you!

*** Named One Of National Geographic Traveler Magazine’s 2008 Tours Of A Lifetime ***

Rich with diversity, this ride gives you the incredible chance to see areas unlike anywhere else in the world and understand the amazing balance of nature, even in the most of seemingly inhospitable of places.

Your journey takes you through lush oasis and small Tunisian towns with ancient Roman architecture. Passing by the cave where “The English Patient” was filmed, you wind your way through the old streets with the Atlas Mountains standing imposingly in front of you, daring you to venture forth. The Arabians you ride are all sure footed and enjoy the nice climb into the mountain terrain with its breathtaking views over the desert in all directions.

As you finish crossing the range the landscape changes to canyon areas flanked with palm tree forests and a lovely babbling river. Continuing on, the flatlands open up with ample chances for long canters through the low lying brush. You and your horse will truly enjoy the wind in your hair and the wide open spaces.

As the vegetation slowly dissipates you begin to realize that all you can see in any direction is sand and visions of mirages shimmering in the distance begin to tempt you. But don’t blink as before you know it, you’ll be at the village that was used in the filming of “Star Wars” and you’ll want to make sure you have your photo taken in with the buildings in the background.

During the course of the ride, and before you finish along the banks of an extensive salt lake, glittering and glistening in the sunlight, you will have the chance to stay for two nights in an authentic Berber camp. This is true heritage of Tunisia and the dinner in the dining tent along with the bonfire are all wonderful preparation as you fall asleep on your comfortable bed under with a gentle breeze blowing outside. For all of those that are concerned about the Berber tent “camping”, rest assured that you still have hot showers each day and all other nights are spent in 4 and 5 star hotels.

2012 Dates: March 4-11, March 18-25, April15-22, May 6-13, May 20-27, Sept. 30-Oct. 7, Oct. 21-28, Nov. 10-17, Nov. 25-Dec. 2, Dec. 9-16

My trip to Spain was wonderful and Juan and Angelika were great – I really enjoyed it and them. The weather wasn’t the most cooperative but we only had one day where we really got soaked from torrential rain. I loved riding through the Spanish villages and eating the local cuisine – it was such fun.

The Sierra of Gredos is one of the most characteristic regions of the Iberian Peninsula situated between the provinces of Avila, Cáceres and Salamanca, and crossed by the Duero and Tajo rivers. The landscapes are full of light and color and natures splendor.

Daily riding is fun, active and over a varied terrain of slopes of oak and pine trees, river crossings of pristine waters and the chance to discover all manner of wildlife from majestic vistas and rocky overlooks. Each day offers exciting gallops across pastures and open fields.

This week ride is an ideal riding week with very pleasant full days of riding, very diverse landscapes with great mountain views and pristine mountain rivers. It is a perfect riding holiday, with fun day rides, long picnic lunches and beautiful pools to swim followed by sunbathing siestas.

Testimonials:

I was invited by a friend to accompany her on this trip, and I have to say it exceeded all of my expectations. Riding through the Sierra of Gredos was amazing.

Under the stewardship of Maria Elena Dendaluce Arriga we traveled a wide loop through some of the most beautiful country I have ever seen, with abundant wildflowers, majestic vistas and ancient ruins and history to boot. The horses were all of excellent quality, very well behaved and in amazing shape. I think they are part mountain goat given some of the terrain they traveled without pause. The trip was well paced with time to get to know your mount and wonderful accommodations and food throughout.

The trip is best enjoyed, I think, by people with a good level of fitness and solid riding abilities as there are extended trots and canters interspersed each day. Go and enjoy!

Set in the largest region of Spain, this program offer riders to the very unique opportunity to ride highly trained horses in both dressage and cross country as well as enjoy relaxed and fun rides through the Castillian countryside. It is equally ideal for those that are looking for an intense week of training to improve their skills as it is for those looking for a peaceful, serene and relaxed country estate with exceptional riding.

This area of Spain was made prominent by the wool trade and the New World and that has allowed it to lay claim to many great artistic and architectural treasures that are still very prominent today. The riding program is set in the countryside outside of Segovia, whose aqueduct is the largest Roman structure in Spain. In addition, Segovia is host to Alcazar, the country’s most photographed castle with its multitude of gabled roofs, turrets and situation in relation to the town – it resembles a fairy tale castle. The city is truly one of the most spectacularly situated cities in all of Spain as the town is set high on a rocky upthrust and if often likened to a ship sailing into the vast countryside.

The riding center is located in the small but aristocratic town of Pedraza de la Sierra, about an hour outside of Madrid. Each day riders had the opportunity to hone their skills at dressage, jumping or cross country riding with two semi private lessons in the morning. The horses are purebred Spanish or Spanish crosses as well as Thoroughbreds and they are all trained to the higher levels – piaffe, passage, tempi changes. In addition, they are quite nimble and enjoy the active trail rides through the countryside, it is a wonderful way for both horse and rider to enjoy the company of each other in a well rounded environment.

You will find the area to be extremely relaxing and inviting when not riding as the weeks are kept to very small groups of about 6 or less, so riders really have the chance to receive the attention they need during their stay. The accommodations are in a guesthouse that has been designed with the riders in mind. Located just steps from the dressage arena and the jumping field, the stable is literally attached to the house, allowing riders to “look in” on their horses at leisure. There are amply sitting areas both inside and outside of the house that encourage relaxing, reading or viewing videos of all major competitions from Burghley to WEG.

The training is run by Salvador Fabregas, who formerly was the Chairman of the Olympic Three Day Eventing Committee for Spain and organizer of the Pedraza Horse Trials, a 1* and 2** Event for the last 13 years – and his teaching methods and style of communication is superb. He will push you when you need it but knows just when to give you a break as well. He is a consummate host that is gregarious both in the arena as well as over the dinner table and you will enjoy his wealth of knowledge and fun personality.

Meals are prepared in the Castilian style and feature many wonderful and local dishes from Paella, to roasted chicken with local vegetables, all accompanied by the wonderful Rioja wines of Spain. This week will leave you wishing you had arranged to stay for a longer period (which can be easily arranged!)

The Equestrian School is one of the best equipped in the world and provides facilities for every discipline of horsemanship, and at every level of experience. Facilities cover a 50 acre site and include two covered, heated arenas, a fenced, surfaced open exercise and practice arena, seating for 700 spectators, a lecture room with audio-visual equipment and two stable yards, housing 48 horses.

From the beginner to the expert, horse riding at Gleneagles offers a new level of instruction, of experience and of enjoyment. The Equestrian School is an accredited British Horse Society training and examination school, and our fully-qualified coaches teach specialist horse riding programs, including carriage driving, trail riding and cross country riding.

The Equestrian School at Gleneagles is one of the most impressive riding facilities in Europe. From sitting on the saddle for the very first time, to show jumping dressage, carriage driving, and scenic trail rides – all ages and levels of experience are welcome. Even little children can learn the foundations of riding on a Shetland pony; beginning with basic safety checks on girth and stirrups when working on balance and confidence – skills to build on in the future. The friendly staff will find you a protective hat and a pony or horse to suit your height and experience before beginning your fun, informative lesson.

Training opportunities at the Equestrian School are unique. The centre, opened in 1988 by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, is one of the most impressive horse riding facilities in the United Kingdom.

A busy and varied program of competitions is organized throughout the year, providing plenty of opportunities for students to compete. Leading trainers such as Emile Faurie, Markus Bauer, Andrew May, William Fox-pit, Jessica Kurten and Cmndt. John Ledingham are a regular feature at the School, providing specialist instructional clinics and lessons. The school maintains the standards of excellence which are expected from an establishment with this famous reputation.

Gleneagles is an AA Five Red Star golf resort hotel set in 850 acres of stunning scenery. The resort celebrated its 80th anniversary in June 2004 and was when it was opened on 7 June 1924 it was described as ‘a Riviera in the Highlands’ and ‘the eighth wonder of the world’. The former Caledonian Railway Company, with its own railway station, built the resort.

Gleneagles is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World; one of the Great Golf Resorts of the World; a founder member of Connoisseurs Scotland, the world class grouping of properties, which provide an authentic flavor of Scotland to discerning travelers; and a founder member of the Quality Scotland Foundation. Gleneagles also hosted the G8 summit of world leaders in July 2005. The hotel, often called, the ‘Palace in the Glens’, lies at the heart of Scotland, but the resort is only a one-hour motorway drive from Edinburgh and Glasgow. You can choose to enjoy the freedom of one of the least crowded countries in Western Europe or the cultural attractions of two of the continent’s great historic cities. Designed in the style of a French chateau and Capability Brown, the celebrated 18th century landscape gardener, inspired the landscaping.

Golf at Gleneagles is an unashamed pleasure. In March 1999, Gleneagles reintroduced Visitor Golf to make the three championship standard courses available to a wider audience. Playing over the immaculate greens and fairways provides unrivalled views of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. The courses were the inspiration of two of the world’s most famous golfers, James Braid, five times winner of The Open, who designed the King’s and Queen’s, and Jack Nicklaus, Golfer of the Century, who created the PGA Centenary Course (formerly named the Monarch’s).

The 2014 Ryder Cup matches will be played over The PGA Centenary Course the venue for both the Gleneagles Scottish PGA Championships and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Testimonials:

I had a fantastic time with Coralie, Vasco, and her students. She’s really a fantastic fantastic teacher and I really wished I could stay longer. One week was NOT enough!

We have already recommended going there to several people because she is the first person ever to give lessons that really made sense, yet were very simply laid out in plain language.

The only only thing we would do different is the meal plan with the hotel. The hotel was beautiful and we had a room where we could see the riding school. However, the meals were HUGE. By Wednesday we were having lunch and dinner in the town with Coralie and staff where the meals were smaller, and less formal.

Now I’m just hoping to arrange some of my personal affairs so I can rebook to go back to Coralie’s!

-Julie Edwards

We had a most fantastic time. Coralie and her working student, Marcus were wonderful. The horses were the best so far and I felt like we left with a lot of new ideas and my trainer was most impressed that “I found my outside rein in Portugal.”

One of the highlights of our trip was that we opted to forego a lesson and went to watch Coralie’s lesson with Daniel Pinto, the trainer for the WEG Portugese team. He trained her and was so supportive and then we also got to watch him work her stallion. I then watched him on TV at the WEG so it was fun to point and say I’d met him. He was very cordial, answered our questions and was very complimentary of Coralie’s training methods. He implied that he thought she and her stallion would be qualifiers for the Olympics in 2016.

Needless to say everything was all we expected and more.

After a tour of Lima, you begin your ride in the remote village of Vinak, about a four and half hour drive south and east. Arriving at your private luxury eco lodge, you will be amazed at the views from its perched position on the top of a hillside.

Vinak has long been a favorite destination of Lima residents as it is the ideal place to get out of the city and enjoy the natural landscape at its best. There are endless miles of roads and tracks for fun and active trail riding on either the Peruvian Quarter Horses or the majestic Peruvian Paso. Situated around a deep valley whose river runs to the Pacific Ocean, this area is replete with lush vegetation and fields of wildflowers await you each day as you ascend to the top of the hillside trails and breath in the view for miles in all directions.

The area is also exceptional for hiking and mountain biking. Should you have a traveling companion that prefers a two footed version of sightseeing or if you are looking for more activity after your rides each day, there is something for everyone.

After a few days exploring Vinak and the surrounding area, you are taken by vehicle to the famous and mystical area of Ica. Your base will be the lovely and verdant Huacachina Oasis, and it is truly that! This is an area of sand dunes, coastline and the mysterious Nazca Lines. The city of Ica is a true treasure and you will enjoy exploring the desert area as two million years ago it was actually an ocean and there are marine fossils of prehistoric pelicans and whale-eating sharks buried in the dunes. The entire area is a strange mix of barren desert and abundant sea.

During the days you will spend in this area you will enjoy the wonderful chance for long canters in the dunes and frolicking in the sea spray. The horses are agile and forward moving and enjoy the wide open spaces.

A national tradition and of great pride to Peruvians is their native drink, the Pisco Sour. It is a grape brandy and when made by the staff on this trip, it is a very refreshing end to a day of riding. This arid area is the wine basin of Peru and home to the Pisco Sour. The centuries old systems of irrigation use underground water supplies and after the Spanish introduced grape stocks in the 1550s, the Peruvians perfected the growing process and industry.

This trip also includes a tour to see the incredible Nazca lines from the air. As it never rains on the Peruvian coast, the remarkable Nazca Lines have survived centuries, preserving the secrets of an ancient culture. This collection of geoglyphs, comprising more than 70 human figures and stylized animals, and 10,000 lines, was first noticed from the air in 1927. Etched into the plains between 500BC and AD500, debate continues about their original purpose – giant astronomical calendar, ceremonial center, or alien landing strip – the remain one of the world’s great archaeological mysteries.

“This trip changed my life!” – that’s how most clients describe this ride. You will have the unique chance to ride back in time on an ancient Inca trail, one that is only accessible on foot or by horseback. Seeing the plains and high mountains in this fashion offer you not only a firsthand experience with the lovely Quechua people and the ancient Incan traditions, but you will have an intimate portrait of life and travel on the Inca Trail as well as a tour of the ancient city of Machu Picchu. And due to this trails’ remote location, you won’t run into crowds of people.

Your trip begins and ends in the Incan capitol city of Cusco. After a tour of the city, you will be taken by vehicle to the start of your trek in the outskirts of the village of Mollepata, a quaint village situated on top of a mountain. You will ride on roads and ancient Incan trails each day as you travel from private eco luxury lodge to lodge.

The trails range from mountain roads to narrow paths along ridges, the views all the while, incredible. During the ride you will pass through lush valleys, cross gurgling streams and pass between the peaks of Humantay and Salkantay mountains, the highest elevation on the ride rounding out at 15,000 feet. You’ll see Quechua villages, llamas, alpacas and if you look up, the mighty condor.

As you ride down out of the pass you enter a lush tropical forest that boasts over 100 types of orchids and you will welcome the shady trees that overhang your trail. The horses are Peruvian Quarter Horses and you will find them to be the only suitable mount for this rugged terrain. They are sure footed and can nimbly trot and canter over the rocky plains and then shift gears to ascend or descent 1,000 feet without missing a beat.

Each night your accommodations on the ride are in private, well appointed luxury eco lodges. Each lodge was designed to blend into the surrounding area and features warm, comfortable beds with fluffy down comforters, a home prepared three course meal and a welcoming Jacuzzi under the stars. The staff are local Quechua people that live and farm the area and maintain the link to their ancient ancestral roots.

Testimonials:

My trip to the Andes went way beyond my expectations. Mountain Lodges is the best run, most organized outfit I have ever dealt with. Everything ran like clock-work. The lodges are amazing, and I still can’t believe the meals. Guido was a wonderful guide, and every member of the staff at the equestrian center and the lodges went above and beyond to make sure everyone was safe and had a good time.

The horses were so fit and well taken care of. Thanks for all your help, and keep me on your mailing list. I still have some vacation hours left!

- Valerie Cheatham

Guido, our guide, was just fantastic, and deals with any problem as if it is no problem. He is superb.

The lodges were quite a surprise, as I was expecting remote accommodations to be pretty primitive. Just the opposite. They could be a destination in themselves. Simply gorgeous. And I also had no idea that we would have the chef traveling with us and all meals would be exquisite, beautiful, gourmet and over the top service. The whole staff of Mountain Lodges was five star.

The horses were good, fit, and well taken care of, thanks to Ricardo and Oscar, who I now call Puma, because of the way he bounds up mountains on foot, short-cutting the trails.

I had a great time! And I’m glad I did it on a horse, instead of trekking!

In the heart of this colorful region between mountains, valleys, hills and forests, you will discover the ridges of the Sienna Mountains or “Sienna’s costum” which were, until the year 1800, the border between the great duchy of Tuscany and the Papal State.

This active ride takes riders through some of the most pristine and lovely parts of Tuscany. The paths and trails are scenic and around every bend is a new village situated on the hillside, or a panoramic view of the rolling hills dotted with the noble Cypress trees.

Each day, riders will cover between 18-25 miles over varied terrain with ample opportunities for long canters and gallops. The itinerary each day showcases the history and culture of the area. Beginning with the archeological park of “Citta del Tufo” you will understand the history of the original Etruscan (the people of ancient Italy) civilization and come to appreciate their life in this lovely and diverse landscape.

A visit to Radicofani is also a welcome part of the itinerary and after the chance to ride up the cobblestoned streets to the fortress, there will be ample time to climb up the steps and take in the complete 360° view from the top of its towers. This fortress, which divides the Orcia and the Paglia valleys is significant in that it is one of the remaining places to see this ancient architecture up close.

End each day with a flavorful meal from fresh ingredients while sipping a glass of your favorite Chianti or Pinot Grigio.

Dates: April 17-23, May 15-21, May 22-28, May 29-June 4, June 12-18, Sept. 18-24, Oct. 9-15

Rates: $2,080.00 USD per person in a shared room ($250.00 USD Single Supplement)

Testimonials:

I’ve now taken a total of five riding vacations and I still call my ride through Tuscany “the best week of my life.” I had such a fabulous time that I’m considering doing it again!

I’ll never forget dining with the three-generation family at their farmhouse just outside of Proceno and eating the Gradmother’s hand-made pasta….or tasting their very own wine made from the grapes of their very own vineyard….or that clip-clop sound of my horse’s hooves on the old cobblestone streets and the little old lady who was tending her garden looking up, smiling and saying “Bella, Bella!”….or encountering a sweet elderly man who proudly gave us an impromptu tour of the town’s centuries-old church that was every bit as beautiful as the churches I saw in Rome….or the time the local shop owner cut cheese and sausages and opened wine for us and refused to let us pay….or the unexpected finding of a goat farm where we tied our horses up and feasted on the best cheese I’ve ever tasted….or the breathtaking views of the Tuscan farmland and trees that I see in all the artwork here at home….or the dreams that went through my head of fixing up the old farmhouse ruins we rode by….or the naps under a tree after a lovely lunch and a glass of wine….or the excitement of looking up at a hilltop fortress and our guide telling us we’d be there by dark and lo and behold – we made it! And last but not least, the tears that went down my face on that last canter as I was so overwhelmed with the blessings of the week.

In short, it was the best adventure of my life. Riding to a different town every day was just thrilling. I can’t say enough about the guides, the horses, the food, the wine, the accommodations, the scenery. What an extraordinary way to soak up Tuscany. You simply must experience it!

As the old saying goes, there is nothing so good for the inside of a young person as the outside of a horse. That is why we have developed the Youth Riding Camp in Ireland; to give young people from all over the world the opportunity to spend time in a rural setting with a lovely Irish family. And of course, there will be many horses.

The program includes seven nights accommodation in a typical Irish house with the Foley family on the grounds of the Clonshire Equestrian Centre, located in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland. It includes six days of riding on either a horse or pony, instruction, horsemanship training and transfers to and from either Shannon or Cork airports.

The setting is the magnificent Clonshire Equestrian Centre, featured in Practical Horseman magazine, with its large indoor arena, large outdoor arena anf polo field, a large cross country course and miles of countryside in which to trail ride. Clonshire is set on rolling hills wiht many mature trees and the vibrant green grass that seems to exist only in Ireland.

The centre is just outside of the village of Adare in County Limerick. Adare is well known as “Ireland’s prettiest village” and is frequently a photographic subject in coffee table books of Ireland. The thatched roofs of the cottages and welcoming gardens are a photographer’s dream.

Sue and Dan Foley are the hosts. Both are instructors and managers of Clonshire Equestrian Centre. Both have competed at the national level and are expert riders and instructors. Their three beautiful, polite children complete this lovely family.

Young people are busy all day with horse care, lesson, demonstrations, trail rides and competitions, and the opportunity to show jump, jump cross country and work on the flat is included daily. Visits to the nearby village, movies, bowling and horse shows are always fun a d well supervised. This is a popular camp to early reservations are recommended.

Dates: June, July and August
Saturday to Saturday

Rates: $1,455.00 USD per child

Your week begins at the country Relais, I Due Laghi, nestled in the rolling Etruscan hills about 45 minutes north of Rome. Exciting canters up long hills and around ancient Etruscan ruins wind their way to vistas overlooking Lakes Bracciano and Martignano. This area is a trail riders dream with miles of endless hills, Roman Roads and wonderful, energetic and fun horses with which to partner.

On Wednesday, you’ll bid I Due Laghi a fond farewell and be taken north into the area of Siena, in the cypress lined hills of Tuscany. The remainder of your week will be full of fun and active rides each morning, in and along land that is a World Heritage Site. The rides follow Roman Roads to ancient fortress towns with reminders of the prominent Medici family at every turn. You will also meander through vineyards and farms that showcase the rich, fertility that make this area so renowned. The absence of large lakes or important rivers hardly leads people to associate it with water, yet this corner of Tuscany has very strong aquatic links – it’s actually an island floating on a sea of scattered thermal springs!

This trip truly combines the best of both of these destinations and offers the utmost in comfort, exceptional riding and mouth watering homemade cuisine. It is in essence, a taste of Italy!

Dates: May 22-28, June 19-25, Sept. 18-24, Oct. 23-29

Rates: $1,985.00 USD per person in a shared room. (Single Supplement: $345.00 USD)
Non-Rider: $1,195.00 USD

Includes: 6 nights hotel accommodation, 4 days of guided trail riding, all meals, midweek transfer, spa visit, cooking class, wine tasting and all local taxes.

The trip was great. Weather perfect, a little foggy in the mornings at Il Poggio.

I loved the horses and dogs at Il Du Laghi, Maria was fantastic, it wasn’t crowded there at all and everyone was very accommodating. Il Poggio was great, the room fantastic and we loved the spa and cooking class. The horses were intense, they had to drop me down on day 2 to a little less “hot” horse, but Carlo and Enrica were great there.

I think Larry, my non riding husband had a good time too – although he was about 4 legged animaled out by the end of our trip. I let the hotel cats sleep in our room at Il Poggio!

We also did Rome, Pisa and Florence as you know – all great.

Thanks for everything,
Pam Mayer

We had the BEST Time!!!!

I will have to tell you all about the Italian Cowboys we met at Il Poggio! It was a blast . We got invited to join their class and Chris was second!!! Only an Italian did better. My horse was a jumper and wanted nothing to do with the exercises! But I got complimented on my riding.

It was fabulous and every time I think a trip can’t get better it does!

This was just what I needed.

Ciao!

The trip was great! The people were very nice and helpful, and of course the scenery spoke for itself. I really really enjoyed the lessons in the morning with Maria at I Due Laghi. She worked my butt off and I got to work on some disciplines I hadn’t really ever worked out, as well as do some jumping (finally on a horse that could really jump!!).

Il Poggio was beautiful! It rained Wednesday and Thursday evenings, and it was remarkably how quickly green started coming up on the hillsides. The spa visit was great, and much needed after my week of riding.

Overall I had a great time. I cannot wait to go back to Italy. I took over 600 photos (haha). Hopefully I can save up some money and time off work to do another trip soon!

Thank you again for all your help!

Dear Active Travel and Clonshire,

What a wonderful adventure! I loved every minute of my stay at Clonshire, and I have already started saving so I can come back next year. Thank you for treating me as part of your family.

Please thank all the wonderful young ladies at the barn for teaching me so much and taking such good care of me: Marie, Joanne, Katrina and Yvonne. And of course special pats for Augustus, Aubrey, Nero, Tristan, Nasdaq, and Laughton. I learned something from each of them.

I’m looking forward to riding Piper tomorrow to see how he likes it when I sit up instead of slouching. (At least that’s what I hope I’ll be doing.)

Again, many thanks.

This trip was GREAT! It was exactly what I was looking for: a wonderful combination of exciting riding and peaceful relaxation. The terrain was varied and interesting. One day we rode up a mountain and then rode through a bog on top of the mountain, which was cool (it was strange to see such deep water that high). By far the most fun day was when we rode through the lake. I’d never experienced anything quite like that and it’s something I definitely won’t forget!

The people were great as well, real icing on the cake! Our fellow guests were so nice and fascinating to talk to and our guides and hosts were welcoming and accommodating. Thank you so much for all of your help organizing. I think I’ve now been bitten by the international riding trip bug, so will definitely be contacting you to arrange more trips in the future!

Thanks again,
- Brooke Barta

Nicola and Bertie are exceptional hosts! Their many years of experience provide a seamless schedule that affords you the opportunity to truly relax and enjoy their OUTSTANDING horses and beautiful countryside. We were amazed at the immaculately clean (and wonderfully comfy) tack and daily blacksmith visits. They look after their horses with as much care as their guests and that makes for happy horses, thus happy riders. Nicola and Bertie’s hand-picked guides were a delight, catering to any need we had on the trail and always putting our safety first. I wish I could have brought my sweet mount Colleen home with me. I already miss her sweet eye and wonderfully smooth ride! The delicious food, comfortable accommodations, amazing rides and overall experience were an exceptional value for the price we paid for the trip. Thanks Stacey, Nicola and Bertie for a wonderfully fun and safe riding vacation.

- Holly Gauthier

You were right, the trip was AMAZING! Everything was perfectly coordinated. The accommodations were stellar & the renovated farmhouse is just so adorable. I also can’t say enough about the food @ the farmhouse, as all the meals were gourmet caliber & extremely fresh! Nicola did a great job pairing me with my horse & I had a great time as Coleen cantered through the pine tree forests, the turf fields, the lake & of course along the Atlantic! Each day was a perfect mix of scenery, history, walk, trot & canter. It was definitely a trip of a lifetime!

Will definitely recommend to all my friends!
Thanks so much for all your help planning this trip,
- Melissa Gersin

This was an awesome, well-organized program! I would give it top ratings! The only thing I might recommend is a side trip to one of the castles. I took a day off riding and used the public transportation system to the Bunratty Castle and it was well worth the trip. Thanks for all of your help and I look forward to traveling again next year.

We had a great time in Ireland – beautiful scenery – great hospitality (Bertie and Nicola were very gracious hosts), great food – both Heather and I loved our horses (Jasper and Nina). There were 11 of us in total but we rode in two smaller groups, one slightly ahead of the other – great mixed of different ages and nationalities – German/Swedish/French/American/Canadian – we really had some good laughs. The day we crossed the lake was hot and sunny – that was a blast!!. A most memorable vacation in every way – we’re already thinking about where we can ride next.

Thank you again!
Glenda Wansborough

Thank you for all of your help with this trip! It was amazing. The company was great – there were 3 riders from Canada, 3 from the US, 3 from Germany and 2 from Sweden. My friend, Glenda and I hit it off with the US ladies.

The pace was quite surprising! On the Sunday when we went for our first trot – it was a total forward trot – really fast. I was in shock! I figured it out and then the guide said, “Are we ready to do the canter?” The horses speak amazing English! By the time that the guide starts to say ‘tr…” or “cant…” they were gone! So for the first “canter” (gallop!) – I lost a stirrup, but luckily, I was able to pull my guy back to a trot to get myself under control again. Thank goodness, I thought it was funny.

We ended up in hysterics at dinner on the Sunday night with the US girls, talking about the “canter”! We were joking saying that we could save time tacking up in the am as we didn’t need bridles – the horses spoke English so well.

I was totally amazed at how Bertie and Nicola managed the logistics. We had 11 riders plus guides and every morning went smoothly. The food was great, the accommodations were comfortable and the horses were charming. Once you got used to the pace, it was great.

We are actually talking about doing another riding vacation with our new US friends. We were thinking, Scotland, Spain or Italy. What would you suggest? I don’t know how we would top this trip. The countryside was also amazing – as well as the weather – it was 18-21 every day and it only rained twice lightly. We actually got sun burned – in Ireland!!

Thank you for your help in booking a wonderful trip. Happy to be a reference!

What can I tell you – the trip was almost perfect (not too perfect as I lost my phone on the return trip) but minor detail. Nicola and Bertie and their team was great. Food was excellent, they were very accommodating with food. The horses were great! I loved the mare I was riding. Our guides were great and only one day of rain, but other than that, it was a fabulous trip.

I hope to do this again somewhere else in due time! Thanks again!

This was an experience of a lifetime and sharing the experience with my daughter, granddaughter and friends made it even better.

We loved the restored old home that was converted into a rustic and comfortable inn. The grounds were lovingly enhanced with beautiful flowers and landscaping features. Our rooms were comfortable and pleasant. Our hosts were gracious and willing to spend time with us with lots of stories. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The meals were always very good. My daughter has a gluten allergy and they always offered her gluten-free options. Then even made gluten-free bread especially for her that tasted like “real’ wheat bread – this is a very difficult feat.

Clearly they love their horses and have made great effort to ensure the comfort and health of their animals. The pairing the horse and riders was done appropriately. The route planned for us was varied with interesting vistas and experiences. Each day of riding was an all-encompassing environment of history lessons, fun with your horse, new sights and sounds – love the dialects.

I enjoyed the lead rider who told us stories about the area through which we were riding, kept us safe and made us laugh. The end rider was also delightful and concerned with our safety.

I enjoyed the two villages in which we had rooms the last three days. This allowed us to know a little of the village life. Again the accommodations were very comfortable. The old hotel where we stayed for the last two nights had a faded glory about it, including the large and luxurious bathroom, and the staff was very professional. This hotel was a window into an earlier time when our simple horse-riding crew would have been insufficiently important to be guests. So I felt this sense of history with the touch of luxury.

Though I have covered many facets of the trip, I must stress that the horse-back riding was the highlight.

Regards,

The ride was wonderful – after seeing similar areas of Ireland from a car in 2008, nothing compares to the up-close of riding through that beautiful landscape. The horses were incredible – extremely well cared for, with excellent manners, sensitive to the leg, and sound minds and bodies! I’m proud to say I did my first gallops on an Irish Cob! At the same time – safety was number-one and our guides were always checking our girths, giving us fair warning of an upcoming faster gait, etc! Bertie and Nicola have the logistics of that trip down to a science, and there the food at their place was incredible too! In short – loved it!

Thanks for everything, Stacey – it was a blast!

The estate also boasts other fun activities such as tennis, archery, a heated pool, a health club and a full service spa. This is a fantastic vacation for all riders but especially those who travel with a non-riding companion or with the entire family.

Unlike some sporting resorts, Mount Juliet takes riding seriously, it is not just something added as an afterthought. The estate has been home to the Kilkenny Hounds since 1920 and the Ballylinch Stud has been operating on the grounds of Mount Juliet since 1915. In fact, during foaling season, guests may request to be present at the birth of a foal. The hotel staff will even awaken guests (if requested, of course) if the birth takes place at night. The birth of a foal is a sight that everyone who loves horses should see at least once.

Riders can take lessons in cross country jumping, hunt seat, show jumping and dressage or just go out for a hack along the beautiful estate grounds. In season, capable riders may be able to join in foxhunting with the Kilkenny Hounds. Because the facilities at Mount Juliet are so adaptable, you can devise your won riding program to give yourself more time to ride or enjoy the other amenities of this wonderful estate.

Built over two hundred years ago by the Earl of Carrick, the hotel is one of Ireland’s finest with 32 rooms, two excellent restaurants and two bars. Each room has an ensuite bathroom but retains much of the grandeur of the original mansion. No two rooms are alike but all are comfortable. After a long day of sports, relax in the spa, have a massage, a steam bath or take a dip in the heated pool.

Package includes 6 nights accommodation in the The Hunter’s Yard, 5 days of riding with 3 hours of daily riding to include lessons, trail riding or a combination of both OR 1 round of golf, all meals, horse, tack, instructor/guide and tax.

Testimonials:

We just returned from the Mount Juliet Estate in Ireland. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on this trip and cannot wait to make a return visit. We have experienced many grand hotels and castles across Europe on other equestrian vacations, and this intimate and personal residence genuinely exceeded our expectations. The view of the river, surrounded by endless pastures of thoroughbreds, was reason enough to sit down for breakfast every morning. Having the opportunity to ride through these perfect fields and forests was a fantastic way to spend any day.

The horses were great; calm, collected, energetic, yet easily managed by all in our group. Having not taken formal riding lessons in some time, I was able to learn so much from my instructor Eleanor. She was very patient and encouraging, yet able to literally “fix” many problems I had developed under past instructors. The training center is the best I have seen and I encourage others to take a private lesson.

All of the facilities were simply fabulous; the spa, the golf, the food at any of the restaurants and a great nights sleep in the intimate accommodations. The visit to Mount Juliet was the highlight of our visit to Ireland. Thank you again for helping make another great memory.

Now, it is one of the best appointed hotels and equestrian centres in Ireland.

Kinnitty Castle has all the luxuries of modern life, within a mansion of historical and architectural importance. Each bedroom is large with its own bathroom and views of either the great lawn or Kinnitty Forest. The castle also has an elegant and beautiful dining room, in which you can enjoy your daily breakfast and dinner. Additionally, you have use of the tennis courts and a modern health club facility, located on the premises.

Each day, you will mount your horse, and venture out into the vast 60,000 acre preserve called Kinnitty Forest. It is filled with deer, pheasants, badgers, songbirds and streams. Kinnitty Forest consists mostly of pines and hardwoods, with many interesting trails cut through the lush vegetation. Riders will find trails wide enough for brisk and exciting gallops, while a slower pace will reveal the natural beauty of the ancient forest. This is Ireland much as it was a thousand years ago.

You may travel to the fascinating Leap Castle, “the most haunted castle in Ireland” and possibly hear the famous owner play his tin whistle. You may also venture to the ruins of Saint Kierans Abbey, which dates back to the year 839.

After riding, it is back to Kinnitty Castle for a hot bath or shower, a refreshing drink in the warm and cozy library, a delicious meal in the dining room and perhaps a stroll around the grounds. Entertainment (in the Dungeon Bar,) is sometimes provided by traditional Irish musicians, who sing songs of brave deeds and lost loves.

Dates: Offered weekly throughout the year, two person minimum.

Rates: $2,375.00 USD per person in a shared room. (Single Supplement: $695.00 USD)

The Loire Valley is world famous for its splendid chateaux that command the landscape. This area was well liked by the French aristocracy for its combination of a leisurely pace of life, a mild climate, its mellow wines and the gentle ways of its local peoples. It truly exemplifies in a very modest way, a taste for the best things in life.

A natural highway to the center of France. The Loire River was traveled from the earliest days and both Celtic and Romans were known to have used the river extensively as a trade route. Unpredictable and sometimes dangerous even today, this river was one of the first that man tried to control but it still remains unruly and wild and is subject to floods, freezes, shifting sands and dangerous currents.

The Loire has played a central role in French history and this is displayed in the breadth of architectural styles ranging from megalithic structures to royal chateaux. Despite being at the heart and epicenter of two major wars, the Hundred Years War and the Wars of Religion, it was still the scene of outstanding cultural achievements and the preferred home of many French kings. Additionally, the power of the local nobility often rivaled that of the French throne as seen in the dukedoms of Anjou and Blois which were established when Charlemagne’s territory was divided among his sons after is death.

This ride showcases the best this area has to offer in terms of history and architecture and it features the sumptuous Renaissance chateaux such as Chambord and Chenonceau. You will canter through fields and woodland paths that connect these incredible pieces of property to each other and truly feel as though you are stepping back in time.

Full of majestic and humble people from history, you will enjoy the stories of the French royalty as well as the inspiring and moving story of Joan d’Arc. These chateaux offer you a glimpse into a time long gone but the walls still whisper the tales of intrigue and negotiation that they contained when in full use.

Each day you will stay in lovely accommodations and enjoy the French cuisine at its best. This is a wonderful trip for friends and family alike as this fertile land with its regal artifacts holds something for all ages and interests.

Starting in the heart of Provence, your first few days give you the chance to see the typical perched villages that make up Provence. As you continue, you will enjoy the way the landscape begins to change and you lagoons, salt marshes, dunes and rice fields with flocks of wild bright pink flamingoes. As you move from the Luberon region in the foothills of the Alps toward the sea, the scenery begins to shift and you will notice that the closer you get to the sea the villages become less abundant and the glory of nature surrounds you entirely.

Special highlights of this itinerary include one of the most picturesque Provencal villages – St. Remy de Provence. Filled with meandering streets, outdoor cafes and ancient fountains, you and your horse will have ample opportunities to stop for refreshment.

Reaching the beach, only you and your fellow riders will enjoy the sandy dunes, the open stretches of beach and chance to enjoy the spray of the waves and the wind in your hair. Combine this with the wonderful French wines and home cooked meals each day and this will be a trip you will remember for years.

The trip was fabulous! Everything went so smoothly from start to finish: Cap Rando really have it together. The horses were very professional. The food was excellent, the accommodations…well, pretty much what I expected on a trip like this. The countryside was beautiful. Our first day it poured rain, but that didn’t stop us from riding into the mountains. Fortunately, after that day the weather was perfect.

All in all, Lucie and I had a great time! Thanks for your recommendation and arranging the trip for us.

Regards,
Lisa Swerdlow

A GREAT trip! I loved the Camargue days the best, seeing all those flamingos- beautiful when they fly, and the white horses that are bred there. The guide was really sweet. The dinners were wonderful, but lasted at least 2 hours, so we learned to “settle in”. The ride was lovely and had a good amount of trotting and galloping. My horse wasn’t smooth but he was steady and fun to ride and really liked to GO.

After the trip, I spent the day in Aix en Provence with one of the women on the trip who lives there and she spent most of the day showing me around, to the site where Cezanne did his painting, wandered through the old town, the market, etc. The last day I took the bus from Avignon to St Remy and walked around there most of the day until taking the train to Paris, to leave the next day. St Remy was really charming, and I enjoyed seeing the asylum where Van Gogh stayed for a year, and the Glanum Roman ruins – we actually had ridden right through that spot 2 days before on the horses. It was so much fun – I NEED ANOTHER VACATION!

Provence is situated in the sun-blessed southeast corner of France, edged to the south by the Mediterranean. In a short time, Provence has changed from days of even a couple of generations ago. Formerly it was, to the French, a place of indolent country folk. To tourists, it was an idyllic spot, but one reserved for the rich or artistic. Today, it is, more than any other region, where the French would choose to live and work.

Provencals are the most generous and warmest hosts and there is an all pervading “Frenchness”, which means that people are polite and punctual. Traditions are important to the people and local crafts are not hobbies but well respected and time honored occupations.

Relationships span generations in Provence and a seemingly trivial slight might spark a feud which could last for generations. There are still villages where one family does not speak to another, even though each has long forgotten why. It all a part of the charm of the people and the villages that make up this incredible area of France.

Some of the most attractive architectural features of Provence are the perched villages. They rise like jagged summits on the hilltops where they were built for safety in the political turmoil of the Middle Ages. From their lofty heights they kept vigil over the hinterland as well as the coast. They were built around castle keeps and wrapped in thick ramparts, a huddle of cobbled streets, steps, alleys and archways. Today many of the villages have been restored by artists and craft workers.

Found across rural Provence, and typical of your accommodation on this ride, the “mas” is a low, squat stone farmhouse. Protection and strength are vital to its construction – walls are made of compact stone blocks and the wooden doors and shutters are thick and reinforced.

You will enjoy long trots and canters through the countryside that inspired Cezanne and Van Gogh and each day return to the mas for a warm homemade Provencal dinner served with wonderful French wine and the traditional Pastis.

This part of the Luberon region of Provence is very friendly, sun drenched and will leave your taste buds overflowing with wonderful experiences. It is often a favorite and many clients have repeatedly chosen this ride as the area is even today, virtually undiscovered by tourists.

Each day you will ride through vineyards, olive groves and forests where you arrive to find lunch waiting you. You will continue after lunch on old Roman roads built over 2,000 years ago and if the day is clear, you will see the Mediterranean Sea on one side and the snow capped Alps on the other with the quintessential Provencal villages spread out beneath you.

The ride will take you through the lower part of the French Alps and along part of the unspoiled areas of France. This is the France of Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gaugin and more recently, the home and setting of Peter Mayles’ famous novel “A Year in Provence”.

Testimonials:

We had a lovely ride in Provence. The weather was fabulous (almost too hot) with not a drop of rain. … at every turn in the trail there are even more fabulous vistas to enjoy. Our horses were perfect for the job: Calm, sure footed and willing to go even at the end of a very hot 6 hours of riding. It was nice to see that the horses are loved and cared for really well.

The food was fabulous and the accommodation quite comfortable and picturesque. The girls loved their trip so much that there was not one complaint about having to get up before 8 am. That is always a good sign as to how much they enjoyed themselves. We had a lovely international (France, USA, Brits from Saudi, and Romanians from Sweden) group of people to ride with, which was fun.

I hope that we are able to use your services again. You made the experience very easy. Thanks so much.

Sincerely,

A fun and exotic adventure for riders of all ages. While the roar of freedom was still heard in France and U.S., its echo rolled into South America… patriotic voices with gigantic dreams coordinated their actions to put an end to 350 years of monarchic domination and open an era of individual free will.

This ride lets you share the privilege of recreating one of the most amazing achievements in the history of mankind - Crossing the Andes on horseback via the exact route of San MartÌn and his “Army of the Andes” in 1817 in order to free the people of Chile from European monarchs.

A truly remarkable ride through completely pristine land, this ride is perfect for enthusiasts of nature and history. You will experience firsthand the efforts that these men independence had to overcome. A mythical journey that draws like a magnet.

This wilderness is flanked by the highest mountains in America, the Aconcagua (20,900 ft.) and the Mercedario (20,700 ft.). It is in these uninhabited places, only accessible on horseback, where huge herds of guanacos roam freely and the Andean condor nests. Only in unique places like this can you enjoy the privilege of watching them in plenitude in all of their majesty.

As the sun sets, the spectacular stars of the southern hemisphere will completely cover the sky. Relax at the camp with its peaceful atmosphere. The campfire that illuminates the darkness as you share a cup of coffee, tea or mate (the traditional Argentine tea drink). All this creates the ideal ambiance to feel the timeless spirit of nature and reflect on each day’s adventure.

On reaching the other side of the Andes, you will be one of the few to say that you fully understand the exact value of each of San Martin’s words:

“…and to the Army of the Andes remains forever the glory of saying: in 24 days we have done the campaign, we crossed the highest mountains of the globe, we ended tyranny and gave freedom to Chile.” – José de San Martín, February 22, 1817, Santiago de Chile.

All departures are 8 nights
2012 Dates: January 15-23, February 12-20, December 14-22 (6 person minimum)
2013 Dates: January 13-21, February 13-21 (6 person minimum)

Argentina: a land of horses, born and built on horseback. Come and enjoy the uniqueness of this country. The Argentine Pampas are the heartland of this bucolic country. Located in easy proximity to Buenos Aires, they are the perfect destination for someone with a few days or a week to spare.

There is no better way to understand the real Argentine spirit than to experience its world renowned “Estancias”. Full of tradition and history and cradle of the best Polo in the world, they are part of the way Argentina was made.

This is the land of the Argentine aristocracy. You will ride for miles on your own private estancia and feel the horizon beckoning as you and your horse move out through the trails. Estancia Santa MarÌa is a true working ranch at the core of the Argentine Pampas. It is a 3,000 acre Estancia, located 150 miles outside Buenos Aires. The Estancia is dedicated to Argentine horse breeding and livestock. The horses ridden each day are from the best bloodlines in Argentina and they have the ribbons and the trophies to prove it!

See how the noble gaucho horsemen communicate with their horses, work the land and honor their ancestry They are all horse loving people and very proud of their way of life and cattle raising skills. They are the true spirit of the endless Pampas and Argentine culture. Argentine history has elevated them to legendary status. They are celebrated in both song and prose where they became truly heroic figures who pronounce their virtues as knights would with strength, bravery and honour.

Rides each day consist of exploring the expansive estancia with an option to help the gauchos in their everyday work. Join them in a cattle drive and give picture yourself hooting and hollering like Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. This is truly a moment where you can still feel the spirit of freedom and have a glimpse of a time long gone.

Enjoy the excellent local cuisine, comfortable accommodations and tasteful decoration. Each evening you will relax at the manor house over a glass of wonderful Argentine wine while your traditional Argentine barbecue dinner is prepared. It is a perfect end to a fun day of riding. After dinner, gaze upward to marvel at the canopy of stars in the Southern Hemisphere.

But the program would not be balanced without embedding yourself in Buenos Aires city, the cradle of tango, the Paris of South America. The culture of the city is everywhere as well as its Latin spirit.

This program offers pure adventure with more relaxed activities. It is an experience without comparison.

Testimonials:

Dear Stacey,

Let us brag as much as possible about our trip. We were met at the airport in Buenos Aires by Tatiana, one of the most interesting and congenial young women we have ever encountered. She was with us throughout our stay at the estancia, and we thoroughly enjoyed her company.

Everybody at the estancia was great. They made us feel instantly at home on the beautiful grounds, and by the end of our stay, we felt like we were saying goodbye to family members. The gauchos tolerated us well, and one of them saved me from potential harm in true gaucho style. I should also report that I cannot rope a cow yet, but if I keep going back, there is hope. And I hope to go back!

Our time in the city was also great fun, thanks to the plans that had been well made and were well executed all the way around. We loved the Hotel D’Artiste.

Thank you for all you did to make this a wonderful vacation for us both.
